The Addicted2Salsa video podcast is back

Posted on February 27th, 2008 by Allan Tabilas

The extremely popular Addicted2Salsa podcast is back! Anthony Persaud has teamed up with Julie Merrill to bring some salsa lessons to the masses. Anthony first started the incredibly popular podcast as a series of instructional videos of various salsa patterns. Almost 20 video episodes are online on youtube, and those episodes together have over three million views! This number excludes the numerous subscriptions to the iTunes Podcast. Salsa Dance Episode 17 has over one million views by itself, which is probably among the most viewed salsa videos ever. Salsa Episode 19 switched the podcast to a audio only radio show, where Anthony and Karlos discussed topics such as classic salsa music (think Hector Lavoe, Willie Colon, Sonora PonceƱa, and El Gran Combo), to cha-cha, to finding the beat in salsa, to salsa/latin versions of regular songs, and more. I learned quite a bit about the different artists and their history through the podcast.

After a six month hiatus, the podcast has returned in high-definition, starting from episode 30 on. Episode 32 is a slick complex salsa turn pattern, where Anthony and Julie mix a bunch of small pieces together.

In addition to the podcast, Addicted2Salsa.com hosts an active forum and wordpress blog, making it a complete salsa community portal. I subscribe to it using Google Reader (subscribe to this blog to with any RSS reader). Check out the site, and tell ‘em that Nuevotec Productions sent you!

For more about Anthony Persaud, check out our interviews with San Diego’s Majesty in Motion (conducted by Anthony himself), and our interview with Anthony and Karlos (conducted by Pauline)

Salsa Stardom - a Salsadynasty article

Posted on February 26th, 2008 by Allan Tabilas

Salsadynasty.com, a salsa media organization based in Orlando, posted an interesting article entitled “Salsa Stardom”. It asks the question (of what are) the next steps for the salsa community. Here’s a snippet from the post:

In a perfect world, salsa dancing would have its own TV channel. A channel that airs on public television, filled with salsa documentaries, travel segments, interviews, competitions, etc. In a perfect world, salsa dancers get paid thousands of dollars to do a show and salsa congresses make millions of dollars in tickets, advertisements and sponsors. Salsa competitions become part of the Olympics. Commercial singers would collaborate more in the salsa dancing community. New movies would come out every 5 months. Brand names such as Nike and Bebe Sport would make ad campaigns related to salsa all around the world. Leaders such as congress men, book writers, and doctors would use salsa dancing as part of their social life therefore promoting it, and last but not least, everyone would actually purchase salsa music and never pirate it.

Can you imagine a salsa tv channel, where dancers are sponsored by a Nike or an Adidas? In addition to several thought provoking articles, Millo Aldea and the staff at Salsadynasty.com have worked hard on building a community at the site, a social network for salsa dancers and salseros. Their main content (dubbed Salsadynasty TV) features interviews with salsa’s most influential personalities such as Albert Torres, Eddie Torres, and the Santo Rico Dance Company. Similar to Nuevotec, they capture the perspectives of both salsa performers, musicians, and social dancers.

I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention some of their completely original intellectual property. They are stepping up the media game with some unique personalities and content that’s homegrown, including “Social Dancing with Pepe” (my favorite social dance video of all time from the 2007 World Salsa Championships, it’s that good), “Car Confessions”, the White Gold persona, and “Salsa Vibrance”. The site also features an active community, who are able to upload their own videos and content, post on the global forum and chat room, and post their favorite schools. Can you imagine that the current site is only in beta form? We are excited for the future of SalsaDynasty.

Oh and one more thing (ok, we’re not Steve Jobs), Millo and Ximea Aldea produced the first Salsa Dancing Reality show, available as an iTunes Podcast. They documented the journey of a student performance group from the Orlando, Florida based Salsa Heat Dance School. Inspired by other reality shows, where nothing is scripted, Millo and Aldea taped students of Andres Echevarria and Julissa Cruz. Watch the high and low moments of the students, who persevere (along with the artistic directors / choreographers) though different obstacles to be very good dance team. Highly recommended.

Welcome to the Nuevotec Productions blog

Posted on February 7th, 2008 by Allan Tabilas

Welcome to the Nuevotec Productions blog. Why a blog, you ask? Well, our current website system isn’t the easiest to use in terms of publishing new articles and posts. Using wordpress as a blog makes it easy to create new posts related to our video galleries, as well as random content found on the web. There’s also the benefit of an easy commenting system, tagging, and social bookmarking.

We would also like this site to be a community blog. So we are reaching out to any authors who would like to write posts. The posts should be salsa related, whether its a review on a salsa event or music album, thoughts about dancing on the loaded on1/on2 question, an editorial on the dancing community in your area, etc. While we may not post everything we receive, we hope to have some great contributions from our readers and viewers. So if you are interested, please contact us.

Here’s our standard disclaimer for content not written by us (Allan, Harry, or Dimas) - The opinions, beliefs, and viewspoints express by the various authors and forum participants on this website do not necessarily reflect the opinions of Nuevotec Productions.

Also, the blog will most likely change in design or look, and in functionality as we get a hang of this thing. We are trying to test if the video gallery and the blog can use the same single account, without you registering twice. It’s a work in progress.

We hope that you enjoy your stay at this blog, and that you are entertained and informed as well.
