iMambo.tv on Youtube

Posted on April 17th, 2008 by Allan Tabilas

iMambo.Tube? YouMambo.tv? Nope, iMambo.tv on Youtube. Salsa video blogging anyone? That’s right, the salsa video media pioneers known as iMambo.tv have started to officially post their videos on the world’s largest video site. (Many have unofficially downloaded iMambo video files and manually uploaded them to Youtube - this has happened to us as well, which doesn’t bother us.) Currently Shaka Brown and Jareau Almeyda are touring several cities in Europe, including Paris, France and Istanbul, Turkey. How does salsa lessons on the river Seine sound? Completing the media rounds are interviews with some of France’s salsa artists and DJs (with on the fly translation in French and Spanish) and performers from Bulgaria / Cuba. Of course, the videos are also hosted on their own website.

Here is one of iMambo’s interviews with Mike from U-Tribe in France (translation by Noemi). U-Tribe (Tribe for Family, U for Urban) is quite famous or infamous for battling Tropical Gem, popularized on Youtube. It’s very interesting to see how U-Tribe started out, and why that particular dance battle became so crazy and aggressive. The French salsa team reminds me of several French breakdancing crews who have won several Battle of The Year Breakdancing competitions in Germany, which is essentially the Olympics of Breakdancing. The breaking battles are quite intense, and in 1998 a French bboy crew (The Family) was disqualified for touching their US opponents (Rock Force Crew). Tangent - check out the Bboy documentary called Planet Bboy, touring in several US cities in March-June 2008 in mostly independent theaters. What does this have to do with salsa? I got into bboying well before salsa, and love both styles of dancing.

iMambo is still taping some of the world’s best salseros in social dances from their travels. They are just dropping knowledge at the same time. And that is always a good thing.
